Bear Box Loan Program

BEAR BOX LOAN PROGRAM

Bears that get into garbage can pose a threat to people and their property, as well as themselves. Potentially dangerous bears are usually killed, so it’s crucial to prevent them from getting into the trash.

Bear boxes help protect both humans and wildlife by containerizing solid waste in a manner that deters bears, and other wildlife, from scavenging.

Placer County Code requires new residential construction to install bear boxes, but only about 60% of existing residences have one. To help fill the gap, and create an incentive to install one, we created the Bear Box Loan Program for existing residents and new construction.

Enclosures must be located and otherwise installed in accordance with the requirements of applicable Placer County Codes (Sections 8.16.265 – 8.16.268) and regulatory agencies such as those of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and your hauler, Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal.
