Mandatory Garbage Collection

Consistent with the goals and policies of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), which requires export of solid waste from the basin and mandated solid waste collection, Placer County Code 8.16.220 makes garbage collection mandatory in the Tahoe/Truckee area.

Mandatory collection addresses litter, illegal dumping, illegal use of other’s services, and animal (bear) access to garbage.

CAN AVERAGING/CREDIT FOR NO PICK-UP

Can averaging is available to single family residences. With this option, residents can pay the flat fee for various levels of residential service for a full quarterly billing cycle (13 weeks); residents can vary the number of cans placed on any given week, provided the total number of cans placed does not exceed the total cans allowed for the quarter. An extra charge is applied for the quarter if the quarterly limit is exceeded. Can averaging is not used in conjunction with requests for exemptions for a home that would be unoccupied in a subsequent quarter.

COUNTY CODE EXEMPTION

Garbage service is mandatory in Placer County, even if you only use your home one day a quarter. You may discontinue your service only if you are not using your home for one entire quarter or longer (see chart below). Homeowners must contact Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal (TTSD) to file an exemption form before each quarter to notify TTSD in advance to discontinue service; they do not adjust in arrears. Homes not receiving service will be checked for occupancy; if found occupied, service will start and the owner will be billed for the entire quarter.

  Service Quarter Exemption Request Timeframe
First Quarter January through March November 15 – December 15
Second Quarter April through June February 15 – March 15
Third Quarter July through September May 15 – June 15
Fourth Quarter October through December August 15 – September 15

If you own a business and a primary residence within Franchise Area 3, you may qualify for an exemption to your residential service. Click here for more information.
